San Marcos/Hays County E.M.S.
Clinical Rotation Guidelines
Effective Date: October 1, 2007
Replaces Date: August 30, 2006
The following guidelines are for students utilizing our service
as their field internship clinical affiliate:
1) Students must be currently enrolled and in good academic standing
in a course approved by the Texas Department of State Health Services
or through National Accreditation.
2) Students falling out of good academic standing status shall
be removed from the schedule, by the educational institution, at
once and may be added once student is back into good academic standing.
Should a student be required to schedule his/her own rotations,
the student must provide proof, from the educational institution,
of good academic standing.
3) Students must wear the appropriate uniform and appear cleanly
groomed at all times. This uniform consists of: black or blue pants,
white collared shirt, black belt, black shoes, and student identification
badge. This uniform will be substituted for the clinical uniform
for the educational institution in which the student is enrolled.
4) Students may only perform skills to the level of their course.
Students are also only allowed to do skills that been instructed
and examined as part of their course. If a person wishes to observe
and are not part of a course they may do so but may not participate
in patient care at anytime.
5) Students may only do twelve or twenty-four hour shifts. All
clinical rotations will begin at 7:00 am or 7:00 pm. Students are
only allowed to do a maximum of twenty-four hours at one time.
6) Medic 1 (Main EMS Station), Medic 2 (San Marcos Fire Department
Central Fire Station), and Medic 3 (Kyle Fire Station #2) will be
the only units allowing clinical rotations.
7) Medic 1, Medic 2, and Medic 3 will allow students twenty-four
hours a day. Students will not be allowed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas
Day, or New Year’s Day
8) Students are responsible for scheduling their own clinical rotations
by using the calendar at http://www.smhcems.com. Educational institutions
may also choose to schedule all of their students and they may do
this in the same fashion that an individual student would.
9) All students must notify San Marcos/Hays County E.M.S. should
they be unable to attend their clinical rotation. Also, contact
must be made should a problem arise during the rotation. Contact
John R. Moseley @ 512-787-9004.
10) All students must complete the San Marcos/Hays County E.M.S.
Online HIPAA Orientation prior to reporting for the first scheduled
clinical orientation. In addition, all students must complete and
return a Rider Release of Liability on or before their first scheduled
clinical. Click Here to begin the
online HIPAA orientation. Liability release form may be downloaded
from the left hand column.
11) All students must have, on file with their educational institution,
copies of immunization records which shows the following: MMR, Polio,
Tetanus (in last ten years), PPD skin test (in last year), and the
first series of Hepatitis B.
12) Students are not allowed to take any type of pictures or video
of incidents while on their clinical rotation.
